Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Farming: Edger Kungapa’s Success Story

One of the notable beneficiaries of the Distribution of Manure Lead Farmers Project, supported by Better Malawi, is Edger Kungapa, a dedicated farmer from Group Village Headman Somanje under Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba District. The project, targeting 250 farmers (150 from Zomba and 100 from Ntcheu District), has empowered local farmers with sustainable farming techniques to improve productivity and food security.

Before receiving support from the project, Edger faced significant challenges in crop production, struggling with poor soil fertility and limited access to quality farm inputs. These obstacles led to low harvests, making it difficult for him to provide sufficient food for his family.

As a lead farmer, Edger received composite manure and improved maize seeds, along with training on sustainable farming techniques. Applying this knowledge, he cultivated maize, cassava, and groundnuts, utilizing manure instead of commercial fertilizers. The results are remarkable—his soil fertility is improving, crops are becoming healthier, and he is expecting a significant increase in yields.

Reflecting on his transformation, Edger shares, "Before this support, my harvests were unpredictable due to poor soils and lack of quality inputs. Now, I see a great difference in my fields. My maize is greener and healthier, my cassava is thriving, and I have successfully expanded to groundnut farming."

With expected improved productivity, Edger is not only expecting to secure food for his household but will also generate surplus produce for sale, increasing his income. His additional earnings will enable him to invest in other farming activities and support his family's basic needs, including his children's education.

His success has inspired other farmers in GVH Somanje, who, despite not being part of the initial project, have shown keen interest in adopting similar practices. This growing demand highlights the potential of the project to drive sustainable agricultural transformation within the community.

Looking ahead, Edger envisions further expansion by integrating irrigation farming and diversifying into poultry and animal husbandry. He strongly supports YODEP’s recommendation to scale up the initiative, emphasizing the need for more farmers to benefit from such interventions.

Edger Kungapa’s journey reflects the tangible impact of YODEP’s Distribution of Manure Lead Farmers Project, supported by Better Malawi. His expected improved agricultural productivity, enhanced income, and growing influence within his community serve as a testament to the effectiveness of equipping rural farmers with the right inputs and training. With continued support, more farmers like Edger can achieve self-sufficiency and contribute to long-term food security and economic growth in Malawi.
