YODEP has encouraged parents in GVH Mindano, TA Mwambo in Zomba, to actively participate in activities related to Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres.
Speaking during a Theatre for Development (TFD) performance at Tikondane ECD Centre, YODEP Program Manager Joy Mwandama said the activity helped community members discuss what works well and what needs to change at the centre. It also raised awareness on the importance of education, community participation, and how funds meant for the ECD centre are managed.
Through the TFD engagement, community members agreed on several actions to strengthen support for the centre. These include a MK1,000 fine for any parent who does not take part in farming activities at the ECD garden and a MK2,000 fine for parents who stop sending their children to the ECD centre.
The community also agreed that the ECD committee will work under the supervision of GVH Minando to monitor activities and address gaps affecting the centre.
GVH Mindano, thanked YODEP for organising the TFD and pledged to work with other chiefs to introduce bylaws that will ensure parents send their children to ECD centres. “The development of our community lies in the education of our children,” he said.
Tamara Nankhumwa, a community member who attended the TFD, welcomed the measures agreed upon.
